He wanted to become a fashion designer but his father said No. He slowly go into the fashion industry by becoming a costume designer. He moved to New York and became head designer for Elizabeth Arden until he opened his own fashion house. He only used the best fabrics he could find then designed the dress around the fabric. This dress is a great example of his work especially the fabric. Cream based silk has 3 dimensional long wisps of leaves in white. In contrast are large tulips embroidered in gold metallic thread. The way the fabric catches the light is breathtaking.  The fitted bodice has a rounded neckline and is sleeveless. Instead of an empire waistline that was common in the early 60s Sarmi put 2 triangular inserts to define the waist. The one singular ornamentation is a large bow at the waist. The skirt is flairs out to the bottom. According to the daughter who brought this dress in, her mother went to school with Sarmi and gave him the money to start his business.
