Carolina Herrera started her career as a publicist for Emilio Pucci. Always into fashion and having a keen eye for color her friend Diane Vreeland suggested she start her own company. In 1980 she opened showed her first collection at the Metropolitan Club in New York. The fabric of this ensemble is cotton piqué which means the fabric is ribbed usually vertical. The top has a double square neckline with short sleeves. The black square buttons in the back contrasts against the white and it is how the top closes. There is a wide peplum at the hem. The long straight skirt has a slit in the back. The patent leather belt goes on the outside of the top.
